Weld Slag Removal Estimator
A guide for SMAW (Stick) welders to understand how different electrode types affect the ease of slag removal after welding.

The Purpose of Slag
In Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), the flux coating on the electrode melts and forms a protective layer called slag over the molten weld pool. This slag has several important jobs:
- It protects the weld from atmospheric contamination.
- It helps to shape the weld bead.
- It slows down the cooling rate of the weld, which can improve its metallurgical properties.
However, after the weld cools, this slag must be completely removed, especially before depositing the next weld pass in a multi-pass weld. Trapped slag is a serious weld defect that weakens the joint.
