The Balance of Burn and Feed

In semi-automatic processes like FCAW and GMAW (MIG), the key to a stable arc is balancing the rate at which the wire melts (the "burn rate," controlled by amperage) with the rate at which it is fed into the weld (the Wire Feed Speed). If the WFS is too fast for the amperage, the wire will stub into the workpiece. If it's too slow, the arc will be erratic and may "burn back" to the contact tip. This calculator provides a good starting point based on empirical rules of thumb.
