Simple vs. Rolling Offsets: What's the Difference?
A Simple Offset occurs in a single plane. It moves the pipe up, down, left, or right while keeping it on the same line of sight. It's essentially a 2D change in position.
A Rolling Offset is a 3D maneuver. It changes the pipe's position in both the horizontal and vertical planes simultaneously. To calculate this, fitters must first find the True Offset (the hypotenuse of the Set and Roll triangle) and then use that value to find the Travel piece.
Fabrication Pro Tips
Always use a Spirit Level and a Plumb Bob to verify your Set and Roll dimensions before cutting.
Double-check the Fitting Degree. A 45° offset is standard, but some industrial specs require 30° or 60° for flow efficiency.
The Role of Fitting Takeout in Accuracy
The Fitting Takeout is the distance from the center of the fitting to the beginning of the pipe. This value varies by the diameter of the pipe and the type of fitting used (e.g., Long Radius vs. Short Radius elbows).
Without subtracting the takeout from both ends of the Travel length, your pipe spool will be too long, making it impossible to bolt up to flanges or weld into the system without massive force, which creates dangerous residual stress.
