The Point of the Arc: Why Tungsten Size Matters
In Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW or TIG), the tungsten electrode is non-consumable; its job is to create a stable arc to melt the base metal. The diameter of this tungsten is critical. A tungsten that is too small for the amperage will overheat, melt, and contaminate the weld. A tungsten that is too large will be difficult to start, create an unstable arc at low amperages, and produce a wide, uncontrolled weld bead.
