Weld Arc Force Estimator

A qualitative tool to understand how different welding processes and parameters affect the "stiffness" or "force" of the welding arc.

Welding Setup

What is Arc Force?

Arc force, also known as arc stiffness, is the force exerted by the plasma jet of the welding arc onto the molten weld pool. This force helps to dig into the base metal and control the shape of the puddle. A "soft" arc has low force, creating a wide, shallow puddle. A "forceful" or "stiff" arc has high force, creating a deep, narrow puddle.

Why It Matters

The right amount of arc force is crucial. A forceful arc, like that from an E6010 electrode, is excellent for root passes in pipe welding because it can dig through impurities and ensure deep penetration. A soft arc, like that from a TIG torch, is ideal for delicate work on thin materials because it gives the welder maximum control without blowing the molten metal away.
