Weld Arc Voltage Drop Calculator
A critical tool for field welders. Calculate the voltage drop across long welding cables to ensure you have adequate voltage at the arc for a stable weld.
Cable and Machine Setup
Enter your cable size, one-way length, and welding amperage.
The Long-Distance Problem: Voltage Drop
When welding far from the power source, the resistance of the long welding cables becomes significant. According to Ohm's Law (V=IR), this resistance causes a drop in voltage along the length of the cable. This means the voltage at the welding arc can be significantly lower than the voltage set on the machine. Excessive voltage drop can lead to a cold, unstable arc, poor penetration, and difficulty starting the weld. This tool helps you anticipate and account for this drop.
