What is a Backing Strip?
A backing strip (or backing bar) is a piece of metal placed at the root of a weld joint to support the molten weld metal. It is commonly used in single-sided groove welds where welding from the second side is not possible. The backing strip ensures 100% joint penetration by preventing the molten metal from falling through the root gap.
