What is Weld Joint Efficiency?
In the design of critical components like pressure vessels and boilers, it's assumed that a welded joint is never as strong as the base metal it's joining. The "Joint Efficiency" (E) is a numerical factor that represents the level of quality and confidence in a welded joint compared to the solid, unwelded parent material. A higher efficiency factor means the joint is considered more reliable, allowing for a thinner (and more economical) vessel wall design for a given pressure.
This factor is primarily determined by two things: the **type of weld joint** and the **extent of non-destructive testing (NDT)**, particularly radiographic testing (RT), performed on it.
