The Metallurgy of Mixing Metals
Welding dissimilar metals is a complex metallurgical challenge. When you melt two different metals together, they form a new alloy in the weld pool. Sometimes, this new alloy is strong and ductile. Other times, it can form brittle intermetallic compounds, which are extremely hard and crack-prone, rendering the joint useless. The key is to choose a filler metal and process that can create a successful transition between the two materials.
