The Language of Welding: Positions
Welding positions are a standardized way to define the orientation of a weld joint. This is critical for welder qualification tests and for Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS). A welder qualified to weld in a simple position (like 1G flat) is not automatically qualified to weld in a more difficult one (like 4G overhead). The numbering system tells you everything you need to know.
- The **Number** (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) indicates the position.
- The **Letter** (F or G) indicates the type of weld. 'F' is for a Fillet weld, and 'G' is for a Groove weld.
