The Importance of Proper Preheating
Preheating is a critical step for preventing cracks when welding certain steels. However, it's not enough to just wave a torch over the part; the heat must soak through the material to be effective. Under-heating or only surface-heating can be just as bad as no preheating at all. This calculator provides a physics-based estimate of how long it will take for the heat from a torch to raise the temperature of a given volume of steel.
