What is 6G Welding?
6G refers to a specific welding position where the pipe is fixed at a 45-degree angle. Unlike the 1G (flat) or 5G (horizontal) positions, the 6G position requires the welder to weld in all orientations—flat, vertical, and overhead—simultaneously as they move around the pipe. This tests the welder's ability to control the molten puddle against the pull of gravity in the most challenging conditions.
Why is it the Gold Standard?
If a welder can pass a 6G test, they are effectively qualified to weld in almost any other position. It is a proof of mastery over heat control, electrode manipulation, and body positioning.
